Young Carers Peer Mentor Job Description

We are looking for a Young Carer or Young Adult Carer to fill these posts as they need to have lived experience of being a young carer. This is a 2 year funded post. The purpose of the role is to engage with Young Carers of all ages in the Cumnock and Doon Valley areas of East Ayrshire. You will ensure they understand their rights in relation to the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 and complete Young Carer Statements to identify outcomes. You will also highlight barriers and issues experienced by Young Carers to professionals within public, private and third sector.

Salary: £10.95 per hour

Hours: 5 hours per week - Flexible working essential

Reports to: Co CEOs

Closing date: 15th July 2021

Post I — Cumnock and surrounding areas — 5 hours per week. Post 2 — Dalmellington and surrounding areas — 5 hours per week. We would consider combining these posts into 1 x 10 hour post to cover both localities.

Major Functions/Accountabilities:

  1. To identify groups of young carers with whom to engage and consult with. These should include young people who are not directly in contact with the Carers Centre.
  2. To engage with a wide variety of young carers on issues relevant to them within the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 to complete an initial assessment for a Young Carers Statement. Working with and from local schools to do this.
  3. Too liaise with the Young Carers service staff team via weekly meetings to keep abreast of support groups, respite opportunities and any other additional support services available to young carers.
  4. To chair regular Young Carers Meetings and report their findings to Carers Centre staff and Board and to the Thinking Differently Team (Carers Co-ordinator).
  5. To assist the Carers Centre and the Carers Co-ordinator to promote the ethos of the Carers Act to other professionals in the spirit of sharing knowledge and educating others.
  6. Engage in marketing and publicity activities to reach hidden young carers and ensure the Young Carers Service has a high public profile.
  7. To complete statistical information on a weekly basis for the purposes of accurate quarterly reports.
